Many Americans like you are being contacted by collection agencies who are trying to get payments on defaulted accounts they have acquired or been assigned. Even though you may owe a debt, you still have rights.

You should dispute the debt in writing if you feel as if the dollar amount the collection agency is requesting is inaccurate, if you feel the debt is not owed or if you feel the debt is fraudulent. You can send a letter to the collection agency within thirty days of first being notified of the collection. You should send this letter via certified mail so that you can prove that they received it. In response to your dispute, the collection agency must cease collection activity until they send you some sort of validation of the alleged debt. They can resume their collection efforts again once they produce proof of your debt.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) regulates what debt collection agencies may and may not do. There are many things collection agencies cannot do or say when contacting you. Collection agencies may not:

  • use abusive or obscene language;
  • call before 8am or after 9pm;
  • call you repeatedly;
  • call you at work, if they know that your employer does not permit personal calls;
  • contact any third party and state that you owe a debt;
  • threaten to have you arrested or imprisoned.

    If any of these things occur, your best option is to consult with a consumer protection attorney.

      Thomas George Associates called me from 6312618800. A man named John Morgan from Thomas George Associates left me a voicemail. In the voicemail, he gave me a case number for a supposed “case” I have with Thomas George Associates.

      Garrett from Thomas George Associates called and said I owed $8000 for an accident. Well fine, except I don’t have a car, and was not in an accident. Garrett from Thomas George Associates proceeded to call me a liar, and said I will be sued if I don’t pay this ASAP.

      Thomas George Associates sent a letter to my child, who is a minor. I called to respond and get some clarification. I then received a second letter stating “We have tried to reach you without success. Previous correspondence has also been ignored”. I don’t know whether this is a scam or not but the gentleman named Fred Burgos was extremely rude and would not provide me with any information. Basically he told me I would be sued if I didn’t pay the whole amount of $10,000 that was due. I even attempted to make a payment arrangement but was denied that too … any ideas?

      I spoke to Tony Redden today about a call I received from Thomas George Associates. The person who initially called me told me he was trying to collect a debt for an insurance company. He asked me my name and I told him to give me his name first and he hung up. I called back and spoke to Tony and he told me that I owed $500.00 to American General Insurance. He explained to me the circumstances in which the insurance company neglected to take the deductible from their insured’s check for a collision job I did. I conveyed to him that that wasn’t my fault and that I did a job for my customer who paid me in full. Why are you saying I owe the money when I did the job for the insured? He told me to get a lawyer and said that he is hanging up, which he did. This company was out to harass me for a mistake their client made to their insured. These people are very unprofessional and crude.

      Received a letter from Thomas George Associates stating I owe them $621.87. They also stated they have tried to reach me. This is the first letter I received. I have no idea what this is regarding nor is the reason stated in this letter.

      I must admit I have been really concerned about TGA from the beginning ! I have had dealings with Fred Burgos about a claim from Liberty Mutual. The amount of $ 4400.00 is unreasonable and I would like documentation and believe I can settle for a lot less.

      We received three letters signed by John Shaughnessy in three consecutive months from this company asking us to pay the money for the claim with Liberty Mutual Insurance. We called the phone number 800-443-8338 (provided in mail) and talked to that guy. He was so rude, did not want to hear us but keep asking when and how we would pay the debt we did not owe. We informed Liberty Mutual Insurance and asked them to investigate that fake debt collector.
