Fast Fact: Pursuant to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, it is unlawful for a collection agency to harass, oppress, or abuse you.
Many Americans like you are being contacted by collection agencies who are trying to get payments on defaulted accounts they have acquired or been assigned. Even though you may owe a debt, you still have rights.
You should dispute the debt in writing if you feel as if the dollar amount the collection agency is requesting is inaccurate, if you feel the debt is not owed or if you feel the debt is fraudulent. You can send a letter to the collection agency within thirty days of first being notified of the collection. You should send this letter via certified mail so that you can prove that they received it. In response to your dispute, the collection agency must cease collection activity until they send you some sort of validation of the alleged debt. They can resume their collection efforts again once they produce proof of your debt.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) regulates what debt collection agencies may and may not do. There are many things collection agencies cannot do or say when contacting you. Collection agencies may not:
If any of these things occur, your best option is to consult with a consumer protection attorney.

JH Portfolio Debt Equities LLC is trying to collect on an old Citibank account. I do not owe this debt to JH Portfolio Debt Equities LLC. My Citibank card was stolen and I reported it as such years ago.
Don’t know what acct. 5178059488742082 is from. I don’t own a Capital One cc.
I had a debt situation with Chase Bank…………I had lost my job and my unemployment was blocked. I had a business contact me that was a consortium of Collection Attorneys out of Chicago, ILL………….I submitted all kinds of forms and was told that the debt would be forgiven. They never contacted the Credit Reporting Bureau and the debt is still listed…………..now what do I do?
I spoke with a Company out of Chicago, that said it was a group of Collection Attorneys that was representing JH Portfolio Dept. Eventually they said they were going to forgive the debt. Now It keeps getting reported with the Credit Bureau, yet JH Portfolio has disconnected their phone and not no new number! Are they out of Business? I guess I must clear this up with the Credit Reporting Bureau and file a Dispute??
